Rope Access Safety Training
SPRAT Level 1 Rope Access Technician Training
Build the hands-on skills, safety knowledge, and confidence to prepare for your SPRAT Level 1 technician evaluation.
SPRAT Training Overview
Rope access gives crews a safe, efficient way to reach the hardest-to-reach parts of a job — when it’s planned and performed by properly trained technicians. Expert Safety Services’ SPRAT Level 1 course builds that foundation from the ground up: systems, equipment, movement, and rescue skills, all trained through hands-on practice designed to prepare students for the independent SPRAT written and performance evaluations.
Instruction is led by ESS’s team of experienced rope access instructors, within the training programs Michael Draper, owner of Expert Safety Services, oversees across the organization.
Key Elements of SPRAT Level 1 Training
- Rope Access Principles – Understand hazard awareness and a technician’s role on a supervised team.

- Knots, Anchors & Rigging – Build the fundamentals every rope access system depends on.
- Ascent, Descent & Changeovers – Move confidently and correctly on the rope.

- Evaluation Readiness – Walk into your written and performance tests fully prepared.

More Than Compliance—We Build Safer Workplaces
Rope Access Work and OSHA Compliance
Rope access sits at the intersection of two OSHA worlds — fall protection and walking-working surfaces — and getting it wrong is one of the fastest ways to end up on the wrong side of an inspection. SPRAT Level 1 training builds technicians who don’t just pass an evaluation, but who understand why every anchor, knot, and changeover is built the way it is under the standards that govern work at height. It’s the same foundation behind our broader rope access training programs.
Systems Built to Hold Up to Inspection
Every rigging and anchor technique taught in this course is grounded in what OSHA and SPRAT actually require. Anchor integrity is its own discipline, which is why so many of our SPRAT graduates go on to take our Anchor Testing & Inspection course as well.
Protection for Techs and Employers Alike
A properly SPRAT-trained technician is a liability shield for the companies that send them up.
Hazard Awareness on the Rope
Rope access isn't just about moving up and down — it's about recognizing the hazard before it becomes an incident, every single time you clip in.
A Credential That Travels
SPRAT Level I is internationally recognized, so the compliance and reputation benefits follow your technicians from job to job.
Why Train with the ESS Training Center?

Our rope access instructors are active professionals who've rigged, descended, and rescued on real jobs.
Built for the Trades That Need It Most
Window cleaning, facade maintenance, wind, entertainment rigging, inspection — if your crew works where a ladder won't reach, this is the program built for you. Already doing descent-based work? Our IWCA Rope Descent Systems course is a natural next step alongside SPRAT.

SPRAT Level 1 FAQ
What does SPRAT Level I certification actually qualify me to do?
It certifies you to work as a rope access technician under the direct supervision of a Level III supervisor.

Your Evaluator will walk you through where you fell short, and you’ll have the option to retest.
